In short
- Hush creates no account, asks for no sign-up, and does not read your contacts or the phone's call log.
- We have no servers: no number, no call and no list is sent to us or to any public database.
- The only data that leaves the device because of the app is what Google AdMob collects.
Permissions and what they are for
| Permission | Why | What leaves the device |
|---|---|---|
| "Caller ID & spam" role | screening incoming calls from numbers not in your contacts | nothing |
| Notifications | telling you after a call was blocked | nothing |
| Internet | ads | see "Advertising" |
Hush does not ask for the call log, phone state or contacts permissions.
How the filter works
Once you grant it the call screening role, Android hands Hush the number of every incoming call from numbers not in your contacts — the system itself leaves contacts out — and Hush decides on the phone whether it rings, is silenced or is blocked, by checking your lists and rules. The decision does not go through the network.
For every screened call Hush keeps a log on the device: time, number, outcome and reason, up to the last 500. It is there to show you what was stopped and why. It is not synced or sent to anyone, and it is deleted when the app is uninstalled.
Your lists
The numbers you add to lists — with the category and any note you write — are stored as files on your device, one per number.
If you turn on the syncable folder, those files move to a folder on the phone that other apps can read, so that a sync service you already use (for example Syncthing, Mega or Drive) can copy it between your devices or hand it to another person. That service does the copying, under its own terms and privacy policy: Hush only writes the files.
When you export a list, Hush makes a file of it and hands it to the system share sheet: where it goes is up to you. When you import a file, its numbers go into a list kept apart from yours. Lists received or sent are an exchange between people: whoever passes on a list of other people's numbers is responsible for it, as for any other file.
Deleted numbers stay in the folder as placeholders for thirty days — so another device cannot bring them back — and then disappear.
Advertising
Hush shows ads through Google AdMob, which may collect the advertising ID, the IP address, technical information about the device and ad interaction data. Google processes them as an independent controller: policies.google.com/technologies/ads
In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google's consent message appears on first launch: until it is answered the app requests no ads. Neither the log nor the lists reach the ad network.
Data that stays on the device
The app's preferences (rules, switches, a random device identifier generated locally to tell two copies of the same number apart) stay on the device and are deleted with the app, together with the log and the lists in the internal folder. Uninstalling also deletes the syncable folder; copies a sync service has already carried elsewhere stay there.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13.
Your rights
Having no accounts and no backend, we hold no data about you. For data processed by Google AdMob, rights are exercised with Google.
